THE FACES OF HAMMER FILMS 10# BARBARA SHELLEY

  1. Of the two 'Babs of Horror' (the other being Barbara Steele), when it comes to articles about her life and career, community and tribute pages dedicated to her she comes off as wee bit of underprivileged.

Is it possible that she's not quite felt as a horror diva (dark, wicked and austere) nor by any means a scream queen (with all the sensual connotations)?

Too graceful and well-mannered, donned with a wholesome and warm femininity , sprinkled with an element of melancholy and sadness, that writhes just beneath the surface, hold out by sheer strength of her character as it is fighting off her inner turmoils and despair, which transforms her, when she's summoned up by the night's most horrid and venomous sycophants, in a tragic heroine, and therefore less a figure serviceable for idiolization perhaps?

  2. Of course, my other half had to remind me of her villainy in Cat Girl, where she snarled and spat her wicked way throughout the movie, but, truth be told, it was still hard not to feel a kernel of sympathy for the character she played... :)
