It had been a nightmare. Peter Cushing's secretary for over 35 years, had spent weeks making plans for 'Sirs' special day. Cushing was a private man, who didn't like fuss. His appearance on ITV's 'THIS IS YOUR LIFE' programme in 1990 had been another dilemma for Joyce, ....when through her feelings of loyalty and Cushing's questions... she had to reveal to Cushing just days before the planned recording the he was going to appear. He went along with the 'surprise' element of the show and when he was pounced announced to the camera 'It's just as well I wore my hairpiece then!' Of course, Peter was prepared.
Peter Cushing's surprise 80th party though, really was a kept under the wraps, with Joyce laying a smoke screen in the shape of 'an invitation to the house, for a quiet little tea'.
The look of joy and astonishment from Peter is evident in these images. Many old friends from his career and life in Whitstable were there to share his special day, along with a television news team...and a specially made 80th Birthday cake.
